Typical Work
A career in repairs will require fixing damaged or broken goods. Human beings use a variety of items on a daily basis and these repairs will often break or stop working properly for a variety of reasons. As a repairer it will be your job to fix the item that is not operating properly. Repairs can be to electronics, appliances, vehicles, mechanics, furniture, woodworking, clothing or other items. The repair work can be very specialized (engine repair) or fairly basic (tailor). Repairers are employed by a wide variety of people. People in this fieldwork for auto shops, computer service centers, appliance manufacturers and sales people, electronic companies and sales centers, tailors and other repair shops. Many people are self-employed in this sector owning their own repair service center. Many times the repair work needs to be completed in the house of the customer, while other work will be completed at the repair center.
Education and Training
The education and training level for these positions varies greatly. For certain careers (auto mechanic, computer repair, electronics repair) you will need some formal training usually obtained at a career college or technical school. There are numerous trades or diplomas offered in these repair specializations. Many of these positions will require on the job training as well. You can obtain a background education in electronic or appliance repair but many times if you obtain employment from a particular company you will need to specialize in their products.
Skills and Interests
As a repairer you will need to be able to diagnose the problem affecting the item and then determine the methodology to solve it. There are so many different careers in repairs that you can have a wide variety of interests. An interest in automobiles, electronics, computers, cycling or other sports can all lead to a career in repair. You should be prepared to work for a manufacturing company, a sales center (Department store) or be self-employed. You should have customer service skills as many times you will have to deal with the customer directly, especially for repairs that are conducted at the customers home. On many occasions you will be working on your own as well.
Salary Range
The salary range for a career in repairs varies greatly because some people can be very successful by owning their own business or because they are specialized. Other careers in repairs can be very low paying. The range given below is very broad but gives some idea of potential earnings.
