Career as an Interior Designer
Interior designers are responsible for enhancing the look, safety, originality and quality of a house, office, restaurant, theatre, and other buildings. The design is usually done using colours, furniture, and lighting as opposed to framework. Interior designers often specialize in one area of design such as home design, restaurant design or office design. Some designers specialize even further and will only do design work for specific types of rooms. The work is often done on a computer to plan the design. Interior designers typically work from their homes and will visit the work site constantly. They will typically purchase all the desired items for the workplace with the customer and will be given a total budget for spending.
Most interior designers obtain a bachelor's degree in design followed by a lengthy internship in the profession. In the U.S. many states require that designers pass a written and practical exam before they are certified as designers.
The salary for interior designers is quite high because they usually operate their own business. Over one third of those in the industry are owners or part owners of a design firm. The average salary for those in interior design is $60,000 with some salaries going as high as $200, 000 per annum.
The interior design field has had rapid growth due to a general interest in the field. Television programs that feature interior design are very popular and there is a plethora of furniture/home decorating stores in the market today. There are many career opportunities but the field is very competitive.
