Career as a Host/Hostess

Hosts/Hostesses are responsible for greeting customers as they arrive at a restaurant this usually requires finding out how many members are in the customers party and securing them a table. The host will sometimes take coats and serve water. The host leads all customers to their table and is also responsible for taking reservations. The host/hostess must determine the number of available tables and determine the wait time to secure a table for a new customer. The main role of a host is to greet and seat the customer.

Being a host requires no formal education or training, most people in the profession learn through on the job training. There is less of a demand for hosts/hostesses in the restaurant industry than there is for waiters, due to restaurants only needing one to three hosts/hostesses. Many times being a host can be considered to be an opportunity to entering into the restaurant business, an entry-level position before becoming a waiter/waitress.
