Career as a Computer Operator
Typical Work
Computer operators are responsible for overseeing and managing the operations of computer hardware systems and ensure that they are being used effectively. They work with computer networks, mainframes and various other computer components. Computer operators must make sure that a computer system is operating properly and must be able to solve any problems that occur. They mostly work with the various operating systems such as Windows, Linux and Apple Computers systems. Computer operators are hired by a variety of employers such as large companies for tech support, government, manufacturing, and computer design companies. Typically this is an office job.
Education Required
In the past you could usually obtain a position in computer operation by going to a technical school and studying for a diploma in computer operation. Today this is not true, a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field is required by most of today's employers in computer operations. A bachelor's degree is an excellent foundation degree to get into a computer career, but you will need to do more training courses in the individual operating systems and computer networks. Any career in computers will require that you are involved in life long learning due to the field changing so rapidly.
Skills and Interests
A computer operator must be adaptable, a quick learner, analytical, and able to communicate with those around them. You will also need technical skills that you will learn through your education. An interest in computers is a must as well as an interest in how a computer system operates, also you must be interested in solving problems with computers and networks.
